Creating a world where collisions no longer exist is one of Honda’s big dreams, and we’re already working toward making it come true. Honda is committed to engineering vehicles capable of reducing the number of collisions in half beginning with our model year 2020 vehicles and making them a thing of the past by model year 2040 vehicles. With an estimated 40,000 deaths involving vehicle crashes in 2016, most of which can be attributed to human error, this commitment is more important than ever. A critical piece in making that commitment a reality is automating the driving experience to reduce human errors.
The Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection (DCCP), under Chairman Bob Latta’s (OH) leadership, released a bill that has the potential to turn this life-saving technology from a futuristic idea into an everyday norm. By ensuring that automakers will have one set of rules to follow, the DCCP shows that it understands the risk of allowing a piecemeal approach to stifle the innovation that has already begun.
Honda is broadly deploying advanced technologies that serve as the technological and perceptual bridge to the highly automated vehicles of the future. We have developed suites of features for both the Honda and Acura automotive brands to assist drivers in lowering the risk of collisions. Additionally, Honda is focused on developing technologies that will better enable vehicles to sense and avoid pedestrian collisions using Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) system. Examples of this technology can be seen in the video above.
Honda looks forward to continuing to work with Chairman Latta and the members of the DCCP on this legislation to support the development and deployment of connected and autonomous vehicles.
