The company honored another six suppliers in the central U.S. region with its Special Recognition Award.
MRO suppliers provide Honda plants with a wide range of goods and services that support the manufacturing of automobiles and other products in North America. Representing local as well as national companies, many have grown with Honda's expanding manufacturing base in the United States, including the establishment of additional operations near new Honda plants. Honda honored its suppliers of parts and materials for vehicle production in a separate ceremony in April 2012.
Honda's MRO supplier purchasing totaled $737 million for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012. This is up substantially from $500 million in the previous fiscal year, due primarily to the start of second-shift auto production at a plant in Indiana and the resumption of second shift at an Ohio auto plant, along with an overall ramp-up of production at all plants. Nearly $69 million went to minority and women-owned companies in the last fiscal year, representing more than 9.3 percent of the total.
Addressing representatives from nearly 150 suppliers attending the event, Jan Gansheimer, senior manager of purchasing for Honda of America Mfg., Inc., expressed appreciation for efforts the MRO suppliers to manage through disruptions to production last year caused by the disastrous earthquake in Japan and flooding in Thailand.
"I want to thank you for all of your efforts, because our collective response demonstrated that by working together we can overcome any challenge," Gansheimer said. "Furthermore, the award recipients we are honoring today represent the superior business characteristics that help assure ongoing success in a dynamic and uncertain business environment."
The Supplier of the Year Award goes to the top companies in various business categories that primarily support Honda automobile manufacturing facilities, based on excellence in safety, quality, cost, delivery and management. Recipients of the 2012 award are:
Tomita USA, Inc., Dublin, Ohio; Voith Industrial Services, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio; Dynamic Weld Corp., Osgood, Ohio; Woodruff Corp., Richmond, Ind.; Health Fitness Corp., Minneapolis, Minn., and Cisco Systems Capital Corp., Columbus, Ohio.
The Special Recognition Award is presented to suppliers that demonstrated the ability to overcome uncontrollable circumstances, perform admirably on a major project or demonstrated exceptional effort to exceed customer expectations. Special Recognition recipients are:
John A. Becker Company, Dayton, Ohio; OTP Industrial Solutions, Inc., Columbus; AVI Food Systems, Inc., Warren, Ohio; IBM Corp., Dublin, Ohio; Central Sheet Metal Products, Inc., Columbus, Ind., and Ferguson Construction Co., Sidney, Ohio.
During the annual MRO Supplier Conference, leadership from Honda also provided an overview for the upcoming year, and direction on what Honda and its suppliers need to do to meet high customer expectations in a challenging business environment.
"Over the next three years, we will launch a number of new models for our automotive business, and introduce a new generation of power-sports products in our North American plants," said Rick Schostek, senior vice president of Honda of America Mfg., responsible for corporate planning and other support strategies. "The speed of doing business is critical. We must be an agile company that can respond to the needs of the customer."
With nearly 30 years of experience launching new products in America, and ongoing investment into new technologies, Honda's North American operations are taking on increasing responsibilities to support other Honda regions around the world, said Jim Wehrman, Honda of America Mfg. senior vice president responsible for supply chain, production engineering and environmental management strategies.
"We are greatly expanding our local product development and production capabilities in North America, and we want to establish North America as Honda's most competitive region in the world," Wehrman said. "What does this mean to purchasing strategy and suppliers? We will be challenged to make Honda's North American region the most cost-competitive region in the world."
Honda has 11 major plants in North America involved in the production of automobiles and the engines and transmissions that power them. The five plants in the Central Region include an auto plant in Greensburg, Ind.; auto plants in Marysville and East Liberty, Ohio; a major engine plant in Anna, Ohio, and Honda Transmission Mfg. of America in Russells Point, Ohio.

EDITOR'S NOTE: American Honda has made several changes to the format of its monthly sales press release. The sole release now contains insights and quotes for both the Honda and Acura brands, and in response to continued requests from the media, now highlights unadjusted sales figures in order to be consistent with the prevailing industry practice. Overall sales are still initially noted in the release according to the daily selling rate (DSR), and the accompanying sales figures chart now presents columns for both adjusted DSR sales figures and unadjusted sales figures. This will be Honda's reporting practice going forward.
American Honda today reported May 2012 U.S. sales of 133,997 units, an increase of 47.6 percent compared to May 2011 (an increase of 36.3 percent based on the daily selling rate*). The Honda Division posted May 2012 sales of 119,411 units, an increase of 46.0 percent compared to May 2011. Acura 's U.S. May sales of 14,586 units increased 62.1 percent compared to May 2011.
Honda
- Civic sales up more than 80 percent compared to May 2011; an exceptional sales figure for any month, Honda sold 33,490 Civics in May
- CR-V sets a May sales record (25,186 units), besting previous record by 5,226 units, leading Honda to a May record for light truck sales
- Accord sales (29,737 units) continue to show strength in the tough mid-size segment, up more than 70 percent from May 2011
"With our best May sales performance since before the financial crisis it 's obvious Honda 's return to strength is in full swing,, and our May sales are impressive irrespective of last year 's production supply problems," said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales. "Any time Honda Civic sales surpass 33,000 units in a month, it shows real demand in the marketplace."
Acura
- Total Acura sales of 14,586 units were up 62.1 percent, making this Acura 's best month since December of 2010
- The RDX had its best sales month ever (3,301 units), with May 2012 sales up 216.8 percent. The RDX is expected to be at the top of the compact luxury SUV segment
- Overall, Acura light trucks posted a best-ever May result of 8,226 units, up 64.7 percent
- The all-new ILX compact luxury sedan went on sale May 22. As dealer inventory builds, the ILX marketing campaign launches with national TV advertising beginning in early June with the NBA conference finals on ESPN
"With the new RDX setting an all-time sales record this month, Acura went well beyond recovering from last year 's supply issues," said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. "Now, with the new ILX reaching dealerships across America, Acura is just beginning a great new hot streak."
*The daily selling rate (DSR) is calculated with 26 days for May 2012 and 24 days for May 2011. Year-to-date, the DSR is calculated with 127 days for 2012 and 126 days for 2011. All other percentages in release are unadjusted; see table for adjusted DSR figures.

The FRIENDS of Cedar Bog Nature Preserve has started a fundraising drive with support from Honda of America Mfg., Inc. toward the goal to establish a $500,000 endowment fund to support the preserve 's Education Center operations and other initiatives.
In this latest partnership with the Cedar Bog, Honda is committing up to $25,000 in matching funds through its philanthropy program. The grant will be allocated to the endowment fund as the FRIENDS of Cedar Bog raises money from individuals and businesses in the community. Honda had previously provided a grant to assist with establishing the Education Center at the bog.
During the kickoff event for the matching contribution effort, Ohio State Rep. John Adams paid tribute to the efforts of Honda and the FRIENDS of Cedar Bog to enhance the educational experiences at this unique natural area. "The bog is a wonderful place that is now being supported with this grant from Honda," Adams said. "The people at Honda are part of the community, because they make themselves a part of the community, and this is very much appreciated."
Currently containing approximately $334,000 from previous donations, the endowment fund 's interest earnings already are supporting Education Center operations, including the recent installation of a camera security system from Champaign County Telephone Sales and Service.
"This matching grant from Honda is providing us the opportunity to work with other supporters throughout the region to raise a total of $50,000 for the endowment fund," said William Heitman, FRIENDS of Cedar Bog treasurer. "We are looking forward to strengthening our partnerships in the community, while also increasing awareness of this unique natural area."
As a non-profit organization, donations to the FRIENDS of Cedar Bog Nature Preserve are tax deductible. Donations to the campaign can be sent to the following address:
Friends of Cedar Bog Nature Preserve

Cedar Bog Nature Preserve is located on approximately 400 acres four miles south of Urbana, at 980 Woodburn Rd., about a mile off U.S. 68. To learn more about this unique natural area, visit its web site at http://www.cedarbognp.org/
FRIENDS of Cedar Bog
The FRIENDS of Cedar Bog Nature Preserve was formed in 2006 to make the proposed Education Center at Cedar Bog a reality, because funding for the new building was contingent on establishing ongoing financial support for its operations. The Ohio Historical Society and the Cedar Bog Association have a management agreement for the everyday operation of the Cedar Bog Nature Preserve, and the Education Center plays an essential role accommodating visitors, and supporting community activities and research.

Honda is the highest ranking mass-market (non-premium) brand for the second consecutive year and fifth among all industry nameplates in J.D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) for 2012, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. announced today.
Honda auto plants also earned two plant assembly line awards for quality performance, with Line 3 of the Honda plant in Suzuka, Japan earning the top Platinum Award. The Marysville, Ohio auto plant Line 1 earned the Silver Plant Quality Award in North America.
The Honda and Acura brands achieved the best scores in their histories of the current generation of IQS. The Honda brand held onto its position as the highest performing mass-market brand by improving on its industry-leading score of a year ago, and for the fourth straight year overall. The Acura brand also improved and ranks sixth among all nameplates.
The all-new 2012 Honda CR-V earned the highest score in the compact crossover SUV category, while five other Honda models finished second in their respective segments. In fact, the Accord (midsize car), the Odyssey (minivan), the Crosstour (midsize crossover SUV), the Ridgeline (midsize pickup) and the Fit (sub-compact car) finished just behind the segment leader. Additionally, the Pilot ranked third, just behind the Crosstour, in the midsize crossover SUV segment. All of these models except the Fit are manufactured in North America using domestic and globally sourced parts. The IQS ranks vehicles based on a measure of reported problems per 100 vehicles (or PP100).
"For the second consecutive year our performance demonstrates our consistent commitment to deliver the highest quality for our customers," said Tetsuo Iwamura, president & CEO of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Thanks to the efforts of Honda associates in R&D, in manufacturing and in sales, we were able to continue to improve quality performance in this key industry ranking."
In the manufacturing area, 2012 marks the second consecutive year that a Honda plant has earned the top assembly line award globally. The 2012 J.D. Power and Associates study recognized the Suzuka, Japan plant, Line 3, as the only global Platinum Award, for production of the Honda Fit and CR-Z. The Marysville, Ohio plant, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this fall, earned a Silver Plant Quality Award for production of the Honda Accord and Acura TL and RDX. In 2011, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC earned the IQS Platinum Award.
The J.D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality StudySM serves as an important tool for consumers in evaluating the quality and design of new vehicles. Since 1987, J.D. Power and Associates has been surveying owners to measure the initial quality of new vehicles after the first 90 days of ownership.
