  • Approximately 374,000 Honda and Acura vehicles affected in the United States
  • The SRS airbag system will be repaired, free of charge
  • No crashes have been reported related to this issue

On Sept. 18, 2013, American Honda announced it would recall (13V-412) approximately 318,000 Honda Odyssey vehicles from the 2003-2004 model years and approximately 56,000 Acura MDX vehicles from the 2003 model year in the U.S. to address potential malfunctions of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbag system in these vehicles due to electrical interference. Today, this recall has been updated (15V-045) with a revised remedy against the electrical interference.

To prevent malfunction, an electrical noise filter was installed adjacent to the SRS control unit as the original repair for this issue. The new repair procedure will be to replace the SRS control unit, free of charge.

Honda has received a small number of complaints of inadvertent airbag deployment in these vehicles after the original recall repair was completed. These vehicles are equipped with SRS control units that contain computer chips similar to those used in airbag system control units installed in other manufacturers’ vehicles that were also recalled in previous years and that will be subject to a similar updated repair procedure. No crashes have been reported to Honda related to this issue.

The owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and informed of the existence of this condition, and that SRS control unit repair parts are not available at this time. Owners that have not already had the original repair of noise filter installation will be asked to take their vehicle to a Honda automobile dealer for installation of the filter as a temporary repair. All affected owners will be informed that they will be contacted when replacement SRS control units become available, and they will be asked to take their vehicle to a Honda or Acura automobile dealer, as appropriate. The dealer will remove the noise filter from vehicles that have had that repair applied, and all vehicles will have the SRS control unit replaced. Both repairs, whether interim or final, will be performed free of charge. Owners that have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, according to the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.

Owners of vehicles from the affected model years are able to determine if their vehicles require repair by going on-line to www.recalls.honda.com and www.recalls.acura.com or by calling (800) 999-1009 for Honda owners or (800) 382-2238 for Acura owners, and selecting option 4.
