The company honored another six suppliers in the central U.S. region with its Special Recognition Award.
MRO suppliers provide Honda plants with a wide range of goods and services that support the manufacturing of automobiles and other products in North America. Representing local as well as national companies, many have grown with Honda's expanding manufacturing base in the United States, including the establishment of additional operations near new Honda plants. Honda honored its suppliers of parts and materials for vehicle production in a separate ceremony in April 2012.
Honda's MRO supplier purchasing totaled $737 million for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012. This is up substantially from $500 million in the previous fiscal year, due primarily to the start of second-shift auto production at a plant in Indiana and the resumption of second shift at an Ohio auto plant, along with an overall ramp-up of production at all plants. Nearly $69 million went to minority and women-owned companies in the last fiscal year, representing more than 9.3 percent of the total.
Addressing representatives from nearly 150 suppliers attending the event, Jan Gansheimer, senior manager of purchasing for Honda of America Mfg., Inc., expressed appreciation for efforts the MRO suppliers to manage through disruptions to production last year caused by the disastrous earthquake in Japan and flooding in Thailand.
"I want to thank you for all of your efforts, because our collective response demonstrated that by working together we can overcome any challenge," Gansheimer said. "Furthermore, the award recipients we are honoring today represent the superior business characteristics that help assure ongoing success in a dynamic and uncertain business environment."
The Supplier of the Year Award goes to the top companies in various business categories that primarily support Honda automobile manufacturing facilities, based on excellence in safety, quality, cost, delivery and management. Recipients of the 2012 award are:
Tomita USA, Inc., Dublin, Ohio; Voith Industrial Services, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio; Dynamic Weld Corp., Osgood, Ohio; Woodruff Corp., Richmond, Ind.; Health Fitness Corp., Minneapolis, Minn., and Cisco Systems Capital Corp., Columbus, Ohio.
The Special Recognition Award is presented to suppliers that demonstrated the ability to overcome uncontrollable circumstances, perform admirably on a major project or demonstrated exceptional effort to exceed customer expectations. Special Recognition recipients are:
John A. Becker Company, Dayton, Ohio; OTP Industrial Solutions, Inc., Columbus; AVI Food Systems, Inc., Warren, Ohio; IBM Corp., Dublin, Ohio; Central Sheet Metal Products, Inc., Columbus, Ind., and Ferguson Construction Co., Sidney, Ohio.
During the annual MRO Supplier Conference, leadership from Honda also provided an overview for the upcoming year, and direction on what Honda and its suppliers need to do to meet high customer expectations in a challenging business environment.
"Over the next three years, we will launch a number of new models for our automotive business, and introduce a new generation of power-sports products in our North American plants," said Rick Schostek, senior vice president of Honda of America Mfg., responsible for corporate planning and other support strategies. "The speed of doing business is critical. We must be an agile company that can respond to the needs of the customer."
With nearly 30 years of experience launching new products in America, and ongoing investment into new technologies, Honda's North American operations are taking on increasing responsibilities to support other Honda regions around the world, said Jim Wehrman, Honda of America Mfg. senior vice president responsible for supply chain, production engineering and environmental management strategies.
"We are greatly expanding our local product development and production capabilities in North America, and we want to establish North America as Honda's most competitive region in the world," Wehrman said. "What does this mean to purchasing strategy and suppliers? We will be challenged to make Honda's North American region the most cost-competitive region in the world."
Honda has 11 major plants in North America involved in the production of automobiles and the engines and transmissions that power them. The five plants in the Central Region include an auto plant in Greensburg, Ind.; auto plants in Marysville and East Liberty, Ohio; a major engine plant in Anna, Ohio, and Honda Transmission Mfg. of America in Russells Point, Ohio.

EDITOR'S NOTE: American Honda has made several changes to the format of its monthly sales press release. The sole release now contains insights and quotes for both the Honda and Acura brands, and in response to continued requests from the media, now highlights unadjusted sales figures in order to be consistent with the prevailing industry practice. Overall sales are still initially noted in the release according to the daily selling rate (DSR), and the accompanying sales figures chart now presents columns for both adjusted DSR sales figures and unadjusted sales figures. This will be Honda's reporting practice going forward.
American Honda today reported May 2012 U.S. sales of 133,997 units, an increase of 47.6 percent compared to May 2011 (an increase of 36.3 percent based on the daily selling rate*). The Honda Division posted May 2012 sales of 119,411 units, an increase of 46.0 percent compared to May 2011. Acura 's U.S. May sales of 14,586 units increased 62.1 percent compared to May 2011.
Honda
- Civic sales up more than 80 percent compared to May 2011; an exceptional sales figure for any month, Honda sold 33,490 Civics in May
- CR-V sets a May sales record (25,186 units), besting previous record by 5,226 units, leading Honda to a May record for light truck sales
- Accord sales (29,737 units) continue to show strength in the tough mid-size segment, up more than 70 percent from May 2011
"With our best May sales performance since before the financial crisis it 's obvious Honda 's return to strength is in full swing,, and our May sales are impressive irrespective of last year 's production supply problems," said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales. "Any time Honda Civic sales surpass 33,000 units in a month, it shows real demand in the marketplace."
Acura
- Total Acura sales of 14,586 units were up 62.1 percent, making this Acura 's best month since December of 2010
- The RDX had its best sales month ever (3,301 units), with May 2012 sales up 216.8 percent. The RDX is expected to be at the top of the compact luxury SUV segment
- Overall, Acura light trucks posted a best-ever May result of 8,226 units, up 64.7 percent
- The all-new ILX compact luxury sedan went on sale May 22. As dealer inventory builds, the ILX marketing campaign launches with national TV advertising beginning in early June with the NBA conference finals on ESPN
"With the new RDX setting an all-time sales record this month, Acura went well beyond recovering from last year 's supply issues," said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. "Now, with the new ILX reaching dealerships across America, Acura is just beginning a great new hot streak."
*The daily selling rate (DSR) is calculated with 26 days for May 2012 and 24 days for May 2011. Year-to-date, the DSR is calculated with 127 days for 2012 and 126 days for 2011. All other percentages in release are unadjusted; see table for adjusted DSR figures.

The FRIENDS of Cedar Bog Nature Preserve has started a fundraising drive with support from Honda of America Mfg., Inc. toward the goal to establish a $500,000 endowment fund to support the preserve 's Education Center operations and other initiatives.
In this latest partnership with the Cedar Bog, Honda is committing up to $25,000 in matching funds through its philanthropy program. The grant will be allocated to the endowment fund as the FRIENDS of Cedar Bog raises money from individuals and businesses in the community. Honda had previously provided a grant to assist with establishing the Education Center at the bog.
During the kickoff event for the matching contribution effort, Ohio State Rep. John Adams paid tribute to the efforts of Honda and the FRIENDS of Cedar Bog to enhance the educational experiences at this unique natural area. "The bog is a wonderful place that is now being supported with this grant from Honda," Adams said. "The people at Honda are part of the community, because they make themselves a part of the community, and this is very much appreciated."
Currently containing approximately $334,000 from previous donations, the endowment fund 's interest earnings already are supporting Education Center operations, including the recent installation of a camera security system from Champaign County Telephone Sales and Service.
"This matching grant from Honda is providing us the opportunity to work with other supporters throughout the region to raise a total of $50,000 for the endowment fund," said William Heitman, FRIENDS of Cedar Bog treasurer. "We are looking forward to strengthening our partnerships in the community, while also increasing awareness of this unique natural area."
As a non-profit organization, donations to the FRIENDS of Cedar Bog Nature Preserve are tax deductible. Donations to the campaign can be sent to the following address:
Friends of Cedar Bog Nature Preserve
c/o 430 Scioto Street
Urbana, Ohio 43078
Cedar Bog Nature Preserve is located on approximately 400 acres four miles south of Urbana, at 980 Woodburn Rd., about a mile off U.S. 68. To learn more about this unique natural area, visit its web site at http://www.cedarbognp.org/
FRIENDS of Cedar Bog
The FRIENDS of Cedar Bog Nature Preserve was formed in 2006 to make the proposed Education Center at Cedar Bog a reality, because funding for the new building was contingent on establishing ongoing financial support for its operations. The Ohio Historical Society and the Cedar Bog Association have a management agreement for the everyday operation of the Cedar Bog Nature Preserve, and the Education Center plays an essential role accommodating visitors, and supporting community activities and research.
Honda Philanthropy in Ohio
During more than 30 years in Ohio, Honda has been dedicated to improving the communities where Honda associates live and work. "We believe that, collectively, our associates ' commitment and compassion can generate the power to improve our future, and we help support the organizations for which they volunteer and contribute", said Caroline Ramsey, executive director of the Honda of America Foundation.
Since 1979, Honda 's charitable giving programs have supported numerous local needs and programs. These include major grants to hospitals, community centers, theaters, food banks, after-school programs, nature preserves and parks. As a result of this shared commitment, Honda and its 13,500 associates in Ohio have contributed more than $75 million to local community organizations throughout the region.

The 2013 model-year season really heats up this month with the announcement of several all-new Hondas along with the return of a number of off-road favorites. The power of Honda's engineering prowess has never been more apparent.
"These exciting new models really illustrate the engineering capabilities that Honda brings to bear in all segments of the powersports market," said Powersports Press Manager Bill Savino. "The radical CRF450R is a potent, game-changing ride for those who are serious about 450-class motocross racing, the CRF250R is the next step forward from the bike that won both Supercross Lites championships in 2012, and the CRF150R race bike continues to set the pace in its class. The all-new CRF250L and CRF110F demonstrate the power of Honda engineering to offer exceptional value to consumers; the CRF250L is a very cool and capable dual-sport model with strong off-road credentials, while the introduction of the electric-start, automatic-clutch CRF110F that replaces the CRF70F represents some out-of-the-box thinking. In addition, Honda's incredibly popular family of small-displacement recreational off-road bikes, the CRF230F, CRF150F, CRF100F, CRF80F and CRF50F, offers a perfect size for all beginners. Of course, Honda has a long history of bringing innovative ideas and great values to the market, and we'll see that again as we release even more models later this year."
- CRF450R: Advancing the State of the Art in 450-Class Racing
With the 2013 CRF450R, Honda elevates the level of performance for 450-class motocross machines. This brand-new machine features a rolling chassis fully focused on meeting the needs of today's "scrub generation" of riders by integrating an all-new aluminum frame along with an innovative suspension package, plus a strategically engineered short dual-muffler exhaust system that tucks in closely to the center of mass. Designed from the get-go as a total package that would be eminently flickable, responsive and lightweight, every element in the 2013 CRF450R chassis has been focused on attaining a low center of gravity along with class-leading mass centralization. The new-concept KYB PSF® (Pneumatic Spring Fork) is significantly lighter and it allows incorporation of a larger, more sophisticated 32mm cartridge damper piston that resets traditional thinking for front suspension performance. That's matched with a new single-shock Pro-Link® rear suspension, plus a revised engine that churns out an awe-inspiring hit in the low-end and midrange along with massive top-end power. There's also a new six-spring clutch, a stouter transmission and much, much more. Bottom line: The 450 motocross machine that has become the ride of choice for many top-level AMA Pro riders now grows even stronger for 2013. To find out more about the CRF450R, go to http://powersports.honda.com/2013/CRF450R.aspx SRP: TBD; Availability: September 2012
- CRF250R: More Potent Than Ever
Even with winning both Supercross Lites championships in 2012, Honda understands the never-ending need to push designs forward to stay competitive. To that end, the new CRF250R incorporates changes to its powerplant and suspension that help kick it up to the next level for 2013. Recalibrated fuel injection settings have given the CRF250R a bigger hit and more response in the low-end and midrange—this in an engine already noted for its broad powerband and an amazing, right-now power response. Superb handling has long been the calling card of the CRF250R, and now new damping circuitry front and rear plus new fork springs with a stiffer rate deliver better bump absorption, improved tracking and more precise handling through those extra-rough sections of track. In addition, new-generation Dunlop Geomax MX51 tires improve traction and feel, while the rear tire also shaves 0.9 pound of unsprung weight off the rear wheel assembly for more responsive action. Such improvements only serve to highlight the CRF250R's well-documented championship-caliber credentials, and all this and more will help the CRF250R retain its standing as the bike to beat on tracks all around the country in 2013. To find out more about the CRF250R, go to http://powersports.honda.com/2013/CRF250R.aspx SRP: TBD; Availability: August 2012
- CRF250L: New Dual-Sport Ride
With the CRF250L, Honda reintroduces the concept of a 250-class dual-sport motorcycle. This is a machine that's more than ready to take on some serious off-road challenges without giving up street-riding accommodations. The compact and sophisticated liquid-cooled DOHC 249cc single-cylinder powerplant produces smooth and consistent torque at low rpm to aid off-road work, yet the short-stroke engine also spins up excellent high-rpm performance for the street. All through the rev range, the CRF250L pumps out a well-balanced and very capable level of power, along with excellent fuel economy. Its off-road-oriented chassis, which includes a long-travel 43mm inverted fork and single-shock Pro-Link rear suspension, make it equally at home on city streets or country trails. And with styling cues carried over from Honda's legendary CRF® motocross bikes, the CRF250L offers the full package, whether the day calls for low-cost transportation, a weekday commute or genuine dual-sport adventure. To find out more about the CRF250L, go to http://powersports.honda.com/2013/crf250l.aspx SRP: $4,499; Availability: August 2012
- CRF110F: A New Approach for Fun
Leave it to Honda to expand the notion of what a beginner bike should be. The popular CRF70F has long held a place of honor among Honda's family of fun, entry-level off-road bikes, but now the CRF110F takes over that slot in the lineup. The CRF110F features a low seat height, modest size, and a four-speed transmission with an automatic clutch on par with the CRF70F that it replaces. The new 110cc powerplant is tuned to meet the needs of those new to riding, and with a new throttle-limiter feature it offers additional tuning options to suit a variety of riders. Also, the CRF110F gets a new, convenient electric starter. Toss in race-inspired styling evocative of the hot new CRF450R, and you have a great new option that expands the family of entry-level dirt bikes from Honda. To find out more about the CRF110F, go to http://powersports.honda.com/2013/crf110f.aspx SRP: TBD; Availability: Fall 2012
- CRF150R/RB: A Big Winner, Sized for Younger Racers
Younger racers may be smaller in stature, but that doesn't mean they can't have a giant-sized heart for racing—and winning. So for these younger racers, Honda designed the CRF150R/RB as an integral part of the CRF racing lineup. This is the full-on racing machine, with a high-output 149cc liquid-cooled four-valve four-stroke engine with exceptional torque and drivability throughout the powerband. The championship-caliber chassis includes race-tuned suspension components with plenty of travel front and rear, all set to take on the toughest tracks around. Over the years and all around the country, the CRF150R/RB has won tons of championships at the highest levels of amateur racing. And that makes it the proven choice for younger competitors who are ready to take their racing up to the next level. To find out more about the CRF150R/RB, go to http://powersports.honda.com/2013/crf150r.aspx SRP: CRF150R $4,990; CRF150RB $5,140; Availability: July 2012
- Family Values: CRF50F, CRF80F, CRF100F, CRF150F and CRF230F
With the CRF110F replacing the CRF70F, the family of Honda off-road play bikes has never looked better. The automatic-clutch-equipped CRF50F is stair-stepped right below the automatic-clutch-equipped CRF110F, while the CRF80F and CRF100F are a step up with increased power, taller seat heights and manual clutches. Higher up the ladder, we have the CRF150F and CRF230F, which are just the right size to suit older beginners and experienced adult riders equally well. Together, these six progressively sized options in the family make it easy to find just the right match for beginning and advancing riders. And you can rest assured that no matter which of these six bikes fills the bill for your newbie, each one comes fully equipped with that famous Honda quality and reliability that keeps the joy in riding over the long run. All in all, the CRF family offers the perfect set of options for family fun. SRP: TBD; Availability: CRF50F - Fall 2012; CRF80F, CRF100F and CRF230F - September 2012; CRF150F - October 2012

We are looking forward to honoring them as part of the live broadcast on ESPNU of the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the Honda Cup," said Jean Lenti Ponsetto, CWSA Chairwoman of the Board and Athletics Director at DePaul University.
Griner, a 6-foot-8 center who is only the second woman to dunk in NCAA tournament play, led the Baylor women's basketball team to a historic 40-0 season and the 2012 NCAA Div. I Women's Basketball Championship. Griner, who received the John R. Wooden Award and was named the 2012 AP Player of the Year, averaged 23.3 points, 9.5 rebounds and a national high 5.2 blocks per game this season, setting a Big 12 women's scoring record. At the end of three seasons, the junior also became the first women's collegiate player to score more than 2,000 points and block more than 500 shots and needs just 65 blocks to become the all-time block shot leader. In Baylor's 80-61 NCAA title victory over the Lady Irish of Notre Dame, Griner had 26 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. Griner is a general studies major with an emphasis on outdoor recreation and will return to Baylor for her senior season.

Stanford finished the season undefeated, and Noyola's squad amassed a four-year record of 95-4-4. Noyola is majoring in math and computational science at Stanford.
"I'm honored to be part of this prestigious tradition and to represent Stanford," said Noyola. "Over the last four years Stanford has challenged me to strive for excellence on the field and in the classroom, and these values characterize the Honda tradition. This honor caps off a very special year for me and I would like to share this with my Stanford teammates."
Ricketts, who pitched her Oklahoma squad to its first appearance in the Women's College World Series in seven years, was honored as the College Softball Player of the Year and has been named to the USA Softball national team for 2012. The junior southpaw struck out 12 batters to lead the Sooners to a 4-1 victory over the University of Alabama in the opening game of the Women's College World Series. Going into the series, Ricketts was second in the nation in pitching with an ERA of .99, second in hits allowed per seven innings with 3.76, second in total strikeouts with 433, and second in strikeouts per seven innings at 11. A native of San Jose, Calif., Ricketts is majoring in health and exercise science at the University of Oklahoma.
"It is truly an honor to have Keilani recognized as the top student-athlete in collegiate softball," head coach Patty Gasso said. "She is a humble and hard-working person whose dedication to the sport has truly made being her teammate, coach or fan a blessing. Certainly this is not just a reward for Keilani, but for all who have had the opportunity to be associated with her throughout her career."
Griner, Noyola and Ricketts emerged as the CWSA's "Best of the Best" on the Road to the 2012 Honda Cup that included Honda Sports Award winners in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports.
