- TORRANCE, Calif.
More than 600 motorcycle riders and supporters, including associates from Honda's operations in Torrance, turned out in full force for the 25th annual Ride for Kids™ event in Los Angeles, raising more than $220,000 to support the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) in the fight against childhood brain tumors.
Ride for Kids is the longest-running, most successful motorcycle ride charity event in the nation and this year's L.A. event once again began at the American Honda Motor Co., campus in Torrance before snaking through various communities rolling to a stop at the Port of Los Angeles CRAFTED warehouse for closing ceremonies.
The PBTF is the world's largest non-profit funder of research into childhood brain tumors research the top cause of cancer death in children, raising more than $70 million since 1984. Honda has sponsored this event since the first ride in 1991 as a way to help fund the research needed to discover a cure for this terrible disease. Money raised by Ride for Kids helps fund lifesaving research and life-changing family support programs.
As a proud partner of PBTF, Honda has supported rides across a number of its operations in the United States. While each Honda location adds its own twist to its Ride for Kids event, the focus has always remained on two things – the children and Honda's commitment to help the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation bring an end to this terrible disease.
"The Honda team is passionate about Ride for Kids and this event is a highlight for our associates each year," said Chuck Boderman, vice president of the Honda Motorcycle Division. "Sharing our love of motorsports is second only to making a difference for those families who could use some hope and help."
In addition to the ride, participants also had a chance to hear from children who have been inflicted with this disease and the doctors who are on the front lines of fighting childhood brain tumors every day.
"Unlike other charity rides, Ride for Kids gives motorcyclists the chance to meet and connect with the children they're raising funds to help, many of whom ride in the event," said Jeniffer McMullen, Task Force Leader 2016 L.A. Ride for Kids. "Participants often form lifelong connections with these Ride for Kids Stars and their families."
The event also promotes the positive aspects of the sport of motorcycling and the positive contributions to the community made by motorcycle enthusiasts.
